Maidened the new Staggerwing this morning. Perfect conditions - almost no wind, bright sun and an entire waist high soy bean field to cushion any hard "landings". The plane climbed out to the left, landed in the road behind me and was instantly run over. Maybe in a few days I'll feel better about this - but not right now. It's what I get for spending that much time on an FB plane.

That's soooo cool! Was it the EAA's plane? I went to the Auburn auto auction and they had the trimotor there giving rides. For a few dollars more (if you had a pilots license) you could be copilot so I logged 20 minutes of dual instruction in a Ford Trimotor. I found out why early large planes had to have copilots. It took all my strength to work the yoke and rudder pedals. Very cool. another cool thing - while we were waiting there was a Long-EZ sitting by the hangar - to which my son added that he was going to get his pilot's license and buy one like it!
I was randomly on barnstormers one day, and they had a Long EZ for thirty grand. I was about to buy it, but I don't have a license or place to store it, so it would have been quite the expenditure. Would have probably sped up me getting my license though. Would have been a hard sell to my wife. Maidened the new Staggerwing this morning. When I lost my first dragon I kept telling myself that ''this is just what happens when you play the game'' but I still fly over and look for it every once in a while although I know it isn't up there.

I unplugged the battery and threw the remains in the back of the shop. I'll check the electronics in a few days.

I have had a few jerks try to run down my rc car in the street. They couldn't catch it of course. Drove it up into my yard and gave em the bird when they drove by.

Not intentional unless you call driving 65 or 70 on a country road intentional in hitting anything in the road. Just unfortunate.

Ahh, that happens. I was driving my car down my little road which is a residential street with cars parked on the side with about 100 houses and this idiot sped up and tried to hit my car. I dusted him and zipped into my driveway.

She was a great looking bird and I hope you build another!

Why did the Spitfire fly near the road? To prove to the Staggerwing that it can be done. Didn't take as long a break as I thought I would. I salvaged the remains of the SW (lost two servos but everything else looks okay) and took the Spit out this afternoon as a confidence builder. What a sweet plane that is! If I could only have one plane I'd be hard pressed to pick between it and the scout. You can have a nice lazy flight with the scout but the Spit is soooo smooth in the air it's a joy to fly.
Random thought: As I was driving to work this morning I was rationalizing the SW crash by saying that I like to build as much or more than I like to fly. Is this "Poor Pilot" thinking? I mean, I do enjoy building but if I couldn't fly would I still build? Probably not. My work was about an hour from home and at a customer that I only go to occasionally so I stopped at the local hobby shop (privately owned - not a chain so I HAVE to support it) and they still had an E-flight Staggerwing on the shelf that was there a year ago. Got a great deal on it and it's my first store bought. When I got home I read through the instructions and then put it on the shelf so I could start building foam board SW3.0. Not buyer's remorse, just not as excited to get the store bought in the air. Wouldn't have bought it except for the deal which leads back to - I think it's about 50/50 for me. I like building what I fly and flying what I build.
I was gutted about the poor launch and hit and run when it happened but I've come back to my senses. It's not like I put a dent in the barn (again) or anything.

It's not like I put a dent in the barn (again) or anything. Store boughts are great for a few reasons. You can take two dtfb planes to maiden, and good flyer, and if both of your weird designs crash and burn, you get to have fun in your store bought at least. Get tired of building and just want to toss something in the car and go fly, they are always there. Did you decide to sous vide cook a giant brisket in your build area turning it into a sauna, and it melted all of the paper off your non protected foam planes. Well, the store bought ones survive.

Flew my Skymaster this morning, what a nice flying plane especially since I took the landing gear off. It's survived my flying for over a year! Sorry about the video quality, I had my hat cam pointed too far down.
