Maybe If I start the thread I will get a bit more motivated than I have as of late. My first thought for this challenge was the Vultee XP-64 as I have had that one on the backburner for a bit, but I have always wanted to try a Rutan design plane, they're just cool, so it was kind of a toss up between the SkiGull and the Quickie. Quickie won just because it was more oddball like. SkiGull will be a good snow project. This could end up working really well or really badly, will need the thinking cap on for this one LOL!

I have always been intrigued by that plane. I've seen plans here and there but only a couple of flying videos. I wonder if that means it's a tough build. Let's do it!

Excellent! Can you send me the plans or let me know where they are?

Now that I look at it, the photo labeled "Rutan Model 68 AMSoil Racer" just isn't, it's another Quickie. Also, it seems hard to tell the Dragonfly and the Quickie apart! I'd like to compare these in proper plans/elevations.

I'd like to compare these in proper plans/elevations. Dragonfly is very similar, landing gear is different and no anhedral in the canard. Looks like maybe its a two seater too, but yeah it is essentially the same plane, you really have to give it a second look to notice any difference

I kind of wonder it is a hard plane to get fly. I can only speak to the one canard plane I built, but it flew pretty dang well in the calm, but as soon as wind got under it, it acted weird. The wind would kind of just toss the front end around, if it got up under there, it would flip the plane backward. I never did figure out what was causing it or where the design was off, or if that particular design just didn't scale down well to that size, weighing 180g, you are kind of at the mercy of the wind.
I think being a tractor configuration it will cover up for some weirdness, and having control surfaces on both wings will help too.

The Quickie seems to be a higher-risk project for me to try. We know that normal wing configurations fly nice, but a tandem this extreme - Maybe there's a reason we don't see many models of these. I'm toying around with a different tandem design, but one that's much more similar to a conventional wing setup. Something half way between a biplane and an all-out severe tandem wing.

From the videos I have watched I am thinking its about a 60 % chance of it flying really well, some of them look really stable, some not so much so. I think those plans are solid, read the articles from the builder and I think he got it figured out so fingers crossed I will try to be as accurate as I can with his plans. Challenge will be the fuse because it is longer than a sheet of foam so I will have to get creative. Kinda preparing for Hurricane Fiona tonight, not expecting it to be too bad here, winds will be gusting 70 kmh and we are going to get about 75mm rain as well through Saturday, if it takes a little shift to the west it will be a bit more extreme, good weather to start a build LMAO!!

LMAO! Normal range here is gusts from high 20s to high 30s. 70 is not really a big deal , we see that all the time really. The Dragon up in whats going on now (50KMH gusts) would be epic at the very least, Put it up in whats coming would be totally insane epic if you could pull it off. Rain will be the problem here, City is a river valley basically and we are on the bay so a lot of main travel is in low lying areas. If you have never heard of the Reversing Falls here you should look it up, pretty unique spot where I live. Weather unpredictable at best depending on where you live, 20 km inland from where I live is a whole different world LOL!

So the journey begins. I printed the plans at 75% , wingspan is 41 1/2 inches and fuse is around the same maybe a half inch longer. Its a nice set of plans so now its time for a stare down to get the plan of attack down LOL! And the other question, Removable wing and canard or no? I think if I make them fixed it will just complicate things, its too big to do that. The other obstacle is landing gear, not really an obstacle but its going to be a challenge to get that look. Now where do I want to put a seam in that fuse? LOL! And never mind the slippers LMAO!!!
