I think this is going to be my last jet design for a while.... after I finish the skyray, which is kind of getting annoying.
This is a recap of what I have built so far.
The Mig-29 is a ringer. It flies great, is pretty easy to fly (as long as you don't lose orientation). I plan on building one out of the skins I have next. Hopefully that will take care of the orientation problem of turning into a black blob once you are over 100 feet away.
The F-106 may infact be a keeper. I still have some patchwork I need to do on it to try it again. I think I was having issues due to lack of thrust. Once I cut cheater holes in it, the entire fuselage quit sucking in when thrust was applied. It is well suited to RC, it has this huge, spacious compartment running along the bottom for electronics. The plane may benefit from landing gear. The wings are a little weak, but that is easily fixed. I still don't know how it will fly since it barely got 20 feet off the ground.
The Skyray is a big maybe. I have found areas that need improvement, like spar placement, and wing strengthening. However, there are some inherent issues... There aren't really any good places to put electronics other than the strakes/inlets on the sides. It is going to require a ton of work to get working right and useable, and anything beyond a kit.
I have a lot of jets I want to do... and would be neat, and I have 1 or 2 70mm fans left, and a 80mm fan. I am wanting to build a trainery jet. One of the problems with the scale jets, is real turbofans don't have nearly the size of outlet and inlets that EDFs require. As I was going over the P80, I would have to do some odd scaling on the thing. So I am thinking about building a knock off of the Habu or viper, and I am leaning toward using a 70mm EDF for it.
Why am I planning on going with the smaller EDF? Well the 70mm gives you 4S and 6S options. I don't even have 6S power options, and I realize that most people don't. It isn't that I can't afford to or want to get 6S. I eventually will, and I am planning on dropping $100 for a battery on my X-UAV clouds once I get it put together and figure out the exact weight of battery I need (I figure if I am buying a battery specifically for one plane it may as well be perfect). I realize folks don't want to buy into a power system on an introductory bird. I realize that most people probably have a charger that takes 4S, and even if they don't currently own a 4S battery, asking someone to buy a 4S 2200 mah battery which they could also use to overpower their warbird.
So with those reasons lined out, I am planning on maybe a more complex jet electronics wise having 4 servos vs. 2; and I really have come to love the 2 servo jets. But keeping it 4S with the 70mm edf, probably around a 1m wingspan, and possibly some undercamber wingtips and maybe a straight wing too.
I know the bottom is going to be flat to keep that simple, it will probably have undercamber wingtips, and I may mold some or all of the upper fuselage, although I may just mold the ducts and keep it boxy on the body, and also include a replaceable cockpit hatch that is easy to make and swappable for FPV ability. What do you think?
