Winds were too high to do any maidens yesterday and I am waiting on servo extensions to move ahead on the Rare Bear so I had a sheet of foamboard and decided to see what I could do with it. Been having great fun with the XK A800 and thought maybe I could knock it off, a little bigger with a little more power. So I found some pics to draw some rough plans up and ended up with six pieces that would pretty much give me everything I needed and the rest I would figure out. The original is 4 channel but I am going 3 on this , elevator and ailerons. Going with an 1806 motor and I will have to look through my batteries to see what I have to keep this as light as possible. It went together pretty quickly and I am looking at only 3 more pieces to finish it off. If it flies I will put up some plans here if anyone would be interested. Just about done with this one, just aileron servos to install and then the bottom can get closed up. Can't believe I got that little Cobra 1806 to fit in the front lol. Calling for rain on the weekend so going to see if I can finish this up tonight and maybe get a test tomorrow morning before work. Not going with the prop you see, a 6x4, I have a tri-blade 5 inch that will do a little better I think. Wind is down this morning, time to give this a toss. Broke a wing tip and the V-stab on a glide test but that was due to not being glued up very well. Got a good glide out of it, so lets see if it has enough power with a 3s 850mah, and a 6x4 prop. The 2s batteries just didn't feel like they were doing it thrust wise. My 4s multiplies like jackrabbits now. I am digging the way that looks.

Maiden postponed due to heavy fog, trying again today. My guess is that this will be close to what the original does as far as speed, thinking about scaling one up to 40 inch span. It wouldn't gain a lot of weight from size change and I think I could get a lot more performance out of it with one of the Emax RS 2205's I have and a 4s battery. Need for speed LOL. I ordered another receiver board for the XK Rare Bear because I want to throw the 2s battery from the A800 in it and see how it goes and if the board will handle 2s. I have flown the absolute crap out of that little plane and I would love to see it go faster without doing a conversion of some sort like I have seen in a few videos. I have replaced the motor mount/gear box in that 3 times now and probably repaired it twice that many times due to high speed impacts with the ground trying to get fancy at low altitudes LMAO! plane is a little twitchy out of gyro mode but handles ok.

Quick maiden this morning with a 3s 500mah , flies great. did about 3 mins and I thought I would bring it down and get some footage and stalled it out lol. knocked the motor out of place but it is still good with a little glue. Half throttle was way zippier than the OG A800 at full so it worked out how I wanted. 40 inch wing probably would have helped with stall a bit, it wasn't bad I just got a little panicky lol. I will cobble together some plans with a bigger wing.

Glad it flew well. I usually do the twitchy elevator on the first landing, too - low level stalls are the worst.

You would think for how many times I have done that that I would get a little better at recognizing that is going to happen LOL! And they always seem to cause the worst damage!?!?!? I should have just kept flying and got footage next time. All good though, fairly easy fix, won't be so pretty but thats ok , need to get a full throttle pass with it to see how wing holds up LMAO!! A little more expo wouldn't hurt either.

All good to go again, decided to just make a new fuse as the motor mount basically got twisted out of the front end in the crash and it was just easier to build a new fuse. Looking forward to a second maiden. IMG_20230716_210348_633 (1) by Chris McIntyre, on Flickr

Build a dual fuse one!
Seriously awesome, I am glad you got it patched up.
On that note, I need to finish the eizenpheil. I had to see if my P-47 would live or die today... it lived.

Hmmmm, you know a double fuse would be cool, or maybe a dual motor setup with a boom tail. Glad to hear the P-47 survived, hope you got some footage.

I was going to get my daughter to record it, but I got through one pack, decided it was too hot and went home. Nothing to see, just an orange plane flying in circles completely quiet.
